McClain was suspended for 10 games on June 30, and now reports from ESPN’s Todd Archer and Jean-Jacques Taylor and Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole say that McClain tested positive for a codeine-based drink called “purple drank,” a mixture of cough syrup and Sprite. According to Cole, users of purple drank often gain weight, and McClain has allegedly gained 40 pounds this offseason and is “incredibly out of shape.” The Cowboys expected McClain, according to ESPN, to show up for the team’s flight to California for training camp last week, but he didn’t attend and hasn’t since. Now, his career is in jeopardy. “Even we don’t know all the details,”Stephen Jones, theCowboys’ executive vice president, told reporters on Tuesday. “We just don’t know.” When asked if McClain’s career is over, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said, “We’re focused on the guys who are here.” It’s unclear where the Cowboys and McClain go from here. McClain had twice retired in his five-year career before joining the Cowboys in 2014. According to ESPN, McClain who was suspended for four games last season for violating the substance-abuse policy is in the final stage (Stage 3) of the NFL’s substance-abuse program. The NFL could order him to go to a treatment facility, though multiple reports indicate that it’s unclear if he’s been asked to. If he does not go to one at the orders of medical directors, then he could face a one-year suspension. If the Cowboys decide to release McClain, then he would count$750,000 against the salary cap, according to ESPN.

Recipients must be board-eligible physicians, physicists in radiation oncology or radiobiologists within the first three years of their junior faculty appointment. One junior faculty member was selected for this award, which provides $100,000 annually for two years. The 2016 JFA grant recipient is Stephanie Markovina, MD, PhD, of Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Markovina served as chief resident and participated in the Holman Research Pathway during her clinical residency in radiation oncology at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She joined the faculty there as a physician scientist in 2015, and she is building her lab to study molecular mechanisms of radiation resistance in solid tumors, with a clinical focus on treating patients with anal cancer. Markovina is interested in understanding molecular mechanisms of radiation resistance in cervical cancer and other solid and HPV-related tumors. She will be investigating the role of the lysosome, a sub-cellular structure involved in protein breakdown, in tumor cell response to radiation and how these signaling pathways might be modulated in cervical cancer to increase the effectiveness of radiation and other anti-cancer therapies. The ASTRO Resident/Fellows in Radiation Oncology Research Seed Award supports residents or fellows who are planning a career in basic science or clinical research in radiation oncology. Three researchers were selected for this award, which provides $25,000 per recipient for one year.
